Impactful Light and Color in Oil Painting
Too often a skillful approach to color is not taught in the art school environment. Yet gaining mastery of color takes time and discipline. This mentorship program is an ideal way for artists to get a deep understanding of the complex and foundational parts of oil painting. Ray Bonilla has received wide acclaim for his approach to color, both in the worlds of illustration and in gallery art. His teaching will apply to both of those worlds. The class is highly structured: Ray will walk students through the processes of creating four paintings over the course of the semester. Their path to understanding color will begin with the study of light on form in monochrome. With that knowledge in hand, the student will then learn how to take a monochromatic painting and add color through the use of glazing and careful layers of over-painting. Students will learn how to work with two traditional color palettes: the Zorn palette and the Chromatic palette. Dedicated students will gain a firm grasp of how to use color for maximum impact in their paintings.
Towards the end of the semester a special industry guest David Ethridge Owner/Curator Abend Gallerywill visit the class and review student work. After taking this class students will also receive the option of a free profile on the Alumni Portfolios page. Visit the Alumni Portfolios page and type a teacher's name into the search bar to see some of the artists who studied with that teacher.

What students are saying about ray's class
"He has opened my eyes up to looking at organize color schemes in a whole new way and it makes so much sense! Ray references numerous artists when he teaches, both past masters and living, speaking to the visual interests of the individual student. Ray breaks everything down into understandable steps which a student can apply to their own work and see the result... I can’t recommend Ray enough." Chuck Grieb @chuck_grieb "Ray’s passion and talent is rare to find in art instructors. His knowledge on contemporary & historical painting techniques, styles, and artists is impressive. I learned so much from Ray during this class, and still felt I was only scratching the surface which is why I’m taking his class twice." Kevin Price @kevpriceart
”Ray's class is awesome! He's a great mentor, walking you through concepts, building upon each consecutive painting. My handling of painting structure in addition to light and color have greatly improved because of him. He's low key, super knowledgeable and highly approachable. I love that he also shows us different oil painting techniques with each painting. Super fun class. I definitely recommend it!" Connie Pieper @conniepieperart
