Melissa Gay looks for stories everywhere. From the microscopic life inside a simple patch of moss to the violent collisions of stars, her inspiration comes from the natural world and the myths and legends people create while trying to understand it. She strives to find the magical within the mundane and the extraordinary within the ordinary.
Starting her career as a scientific illustrator doing ink drawings for botany manuals and later doing black and white line art for roleplaying games, her award-winning work has since appeared on the covers and interiors of many games, books, magazines, academic publications, and even a tarot deck, for clients such as Baen Books, Llewellyn Worldwide, Hay House, Apex Press, and many, many game companies. Her Imaginative Realist work has been featured in ImagineFX Magazine, io9, tor.com, and several of the Infected By Art anthologies, while her impressionist-influenced “I Dream of Space” works have won critical acclaim and are in the hands of collectors around the world. She is a member of ASFA and of the Changeling Artist Collective, and she co-founded the Birdwhisperer Project (http://birdwhispererproject.com).
Apart from drawing and painting, she is never happier than when in the woods hunting for secret waterfalls and climbing on rocks. She can whistle a passable screech owl call.
