Jo Tomsick grew up in Cleveland, Ohio as a shy artist in a family of extroverted musicians. She found belonging in books, video games, and imaginary friends, and spent her free time reading, sketching, and dreaming up adventures in otherworldly realms. As an adult, making authentic art for her means casting back to that childhood imagination and diving into the stories and imagery that inspired her then. The symbolism and metaphor in myth, folklore, science fiction, and fantasy are frequent sources of inspiration for her work. One symbol that recurs in her work the concept of flight, and birds in general. In Jo’s work, birds act as mystical guides or enigmatic familiars to their human counterparts. Jo’s oil painting method involves pairing an academic approach to realism with room for experimentation. Implementing a rigorous concept and design process helps her dial in the emotional message for each painting, while thoughtfully crafting the image. Jo frequently works in layers in order to gradually coax her thematic elements to life, while also lending the work a dreamlike quality. Recently, she's incorporated 3D modeling to enhance the realism of her reference material, which has transformed her process. Jo sells prints and originals online via Instagram and her website, and is always searching for new galleries and venues in which to sell her original artwork. As an emerging artist, she has had the honor of participating in a number of shows across the country this year, including Surreal Salon 17, UltraHive III, and Modern Eden's Portrait Show XIII, as well as group shows with Flying Horse & Poetic Tiger galleries. Jo lives in Berkeley, CA with her miniature-painting afficionado husband, and her cat, Cassiopeia.
