Watch a portion of Rebecca's Class while she does a figure drawing demo- incorporating the stylistic thinking of other artistic influences, and how important it is in the training and development of your own journey as a student. This portion of class only shows a demo by Rebecca- but full classes have hands on critique with draw overs and full critiques with the same shared desktop formula, with students asking questions and the teacher responding to their individual needs in each piece
Very frequently asked questions about SmART School:
Is Class Refundable if I Cannot join at Class Time?
**As with any career choice, this class is a commitment and tuition is non refundable and non transferrable to another semester. We are run by working artists, not an endowed college and we make the commitment to teach and the students commit to come and work hard.
*Classes cannot be recorded or shared on the web- they are solely between your teacher and you.
Should a class be cancelled by SmArt School for any unforeseen reason on our end, in that instance alone we will refund tuition to anyone currently signed up for that teachers class, or give the enrolled student an option to choose another class.**
DO YOU OFFER FINANCING/PAYMENT PLANS?
The best and easiest payment plan is if you live here in the US you can likely qualify for PAYPAL's BILL ME LATER which will break your tuition into six payments and in most cases interest free. If you do not live in the US or do not qualify for bill me later, paypal allows you to pay with your own credit card, and finance it that way.
How exactly are the classes taught ? Via your own software, or with something like Skype ?
We provide the meeting applications but you will need an intel based operating system on your computer or laptop, and a headset with a mic.
Classes can also be followed on an iPAD very reliably and easily!
You must have a high speed internet connection(cable and a hard line connection is preferred) to get the best and smoothest class. We have had excellent results in classes so far, but anything online might have a glitch now and then.
Therefore should any tech issues arise in class for you we have a SmArt School TA in all your classes with you to trouble shoot anything in the moment.
During my first year mentoring I tried all the major platforms ( skype, blackboard, teamviewer etc...) and I finally settled on GO TO Meeting. Its SOOO much more reliable than the others and it's very very easy to use. We pay for a premium account and we have had very good student teacher interface with this application.
The teachers share their desktop to do critique of assignments and hands on draw overs in photoshop - as well as slide show lectures and individual q&a with everyone.
Is there such a thing as a summer session ?
Sometimes we offer a summer class with a guest teacher
Is this program for everyone? Can artists of any skill level can enroll in the program or is this just for advanced level artists?
We have just started a BEGINNER BOOT CAMP- that we highly recommend for the true newbie!
We have, in the past worked with beginners and get then moving well with their work- faster than many other programs- but if you are truly a beginner you should expect to start with the boot camp for a semester and then to stay with one of the full mentorships for at least a year -or two years.
This may seem like a lot- but it is much less expensive than a college class and you get a MUCH better teacher /student ratio and very focused one on one critique.Within class assignments teachers and move forward at a pace tailor made for where you are currently.
It IS a lot of work though and you will only get the full benefit it you do ALL the assignments and make the most of the relationship with your professional instructor. If you are somewhat experienced- but your portfolio needs final polishing to be considered professional you should see strong results in one or two semesters in a mentorship- you will also meet and get sample assignments( non published) from actual art directors, which is something very few other colleges or art classes offer. You make connections with both the teachers and the Art director that is in your class every semester. No art program can guarantee you work at the end but we can provide, if you put in the work on your end, a very good shot at knowing the things you need to know in a way that no other college that i know of does. I personally went to Pratt Institute and I WISH I had had this kind of training and information when i graduated.I know many professional artists feel the same that is whey we started SAS
Is this program just for traditional artists or can digital artists benefit equally from this?
Digital or traditional are both fine.We don't teach you how to "use photoshop" though- just the basics of great picture making, composition and concept. Its not a photoshop or Corel methods class- its and art content class.
Can you give a quick overview on what will be taught in the program each week?
Each teacher works differently but all aim to work with the individual goals of each of their students- thats why classes are small- you will likely get 2-4 finished pieces done in a semester.
All the instructors are exceptional. How should I decide which instructor to learn from?
Choose the one that works in the style and area of the industry you most want to work in yourself. You will be able to monitor ( observe class) a second class by another instructor every week as well.
Will I be awarded a certificate of completion or something similar to indicate that I've successfully completed the program?
No we will don't offer a diploma, or a degree. But you can say you "trained personally" on any resume with "Rebecca Guay" or any of the teachers you might work with. We can give you a document that said you completed a semester( or more) under a specific teacher
A diploma and a degree does not get you work in art/illustration- only a great portfolio does.
More about SAS and why we started it:
Did you graduate from school feeling like you did not have a good footing with your
work, that there was more you needed to know?
Do you feel that you understand what the steps are in the industry to move forward
with the business; or do you have questions?
Would you like to be able to have access to the painting techniques and business
concepts of successful artists/illustrators thriving in their careers, in a very small
Would you like to not have to enroll in a masters program or go back to a full art
program at school to do so, (and still get a superior quality specialized training)?
SmArt School offers a choice of interactive classes taught online by industry professionals.
Our classes are small. Some teacher only take on 2 or 3 students. Most classes are between 4 and 8 people and will never have more than 12, ever. We want to ensure one on one time for each student with the instructor teaching the course.
The other half of being an artist is the "business of art" and having access to people who have succeeded, so you can ask questions and gain information. The SmArt School teacher you choose to work with will push your portfolio toward the kind of polished work you need to succeed as well as be available for your business/industry related questions throughout the semester.
You can sign up with a SmArt School class if you are out of school and need/want more instruction, or use it as a supplement if you are attending a school or university that does not offer the kind of super focused instruction that you would receive with a SmArt School faculty member.
You will also get to know other students with like minded passion in the type of art you want to create, with a focused drive to succeed in the business or art/illustration.
