Beginning Illustration

Illustration is much more than just being able to draw a thing. We will go over all the essentials of creating drama, mood, composition. There will be in-depth lectures on composition, reference gathering, basic photography, cinematic lighting and the creation of maquettes for imaginative realism art. There is so much to learn!

In addition we will introduce you to the rich history of illustration. Every illustrator today is building upon the many greats that have come before. Yet this history is seldom taught. Having knowledge of the illustrators of the past can help you as you journey towards creating your own vision in the world of narrative art.

We will establish the techniques that will help you continue your studies and prosper in the advanced mentorships at SmArt School or wherever your artistic journey takes you.

Because these classes are small, Eric will be able to meet you where you are at with your skills and interests.  Everyone is welcome. The class covers essentials that continue to be important principles for all artists. It can serve as an introductory course or as a refresher course for experienced students as they develop their portfolio.  Eric provides a range of assignments based on real-life illustration jobs or following the students' narrative art interests. Students will start using their skills as they're guided by Eric's many years as an artist and teacher.

The class covers essentials that continue to be important principles for all artists. It can serve as an introductory course or as a refresher course for experienced students as they develop or rework their portfolio. At the end of the semester each student's work will be introduced to a special artist guest.
