showcasing your style while working with established Characters

One of the key challenges of illustration and art is to give your vision to known characters. This is important in a wide range of situations, whether you are depicting superheroes, video game characters, movie and entertainment personalities, classic figures from history and literature, or interpreting photographs as a source for your personal art.

It is easy for one's artistic voice to get lost on projects that feature well established brands and imagery.  There may be pressure to conform to a particular style, and it may be tempting to follow too closely in the footsteps of the art that has come before.  This can be especially true in the field of genre art. Superheroes, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Suspense characters can feel stale and repetitive when the artist is confined to making safe and expected choices.  With this class, David explores how to push outside of that safe zone and create work which is more personal, unexpected, memorable, and engaging.  This could mean working to get a clearer picture of your own personal voice, or it could mean learning to apply a very outside-the-box aesthetic to well established markets.

The guest for this class will be Jennifer Wu, who served as the project manager for the 2020 Marvel Masterpieces series for which David created 135 original paintings of Marvel superheroes. She will join the class to review student work towards the end of the semester.

An artist should not be just a pair of hands following orders.  You have something unique to bring to any project, and our goal will be working to develop that ability.
We are very excited to have David teach with us for the first time this semester.

After taking this class students will also receive a free profile on the Smarter Art Market
